Infertility and IVF:  Treatment & Cost

Infertility is an increasing problem because of increased incidence of premature ovarian reserve, polycystic ovarian disease and male infertility. As the diagnostic measures have improved an accurate diagnosis can be made and treatment given accordingly. Since the infertile population is increasing IVF is required more and more. Advances in Assisted reproductive technology have started giving higher success rates for IVF. IVF is indicated in women who have a tubal blockage, unexplained infertility not responding to basic treatment of IUI and male factor infertility where semen count is poor. It is indicated where males have no sperms ( azoospermia ) and sperm retrieval is done from the testis and subsequently patients undergo a procedure known as intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI).

It is also indicated in women with severe endometriosis. Women who go into premature menopause have the choice of taking a donor oocyte and undergoing an IVF. Similarly women who cannot produce a baby because of absence of a uterus or due to medical reasons can have an IVF with their own oocytes and husbands sperm and deposit the embryos in a surrogates who produces the baby for them. What limits may infertile couples to avail this treatment is the high cost. One cycle would cost about 1,20,000/ per cycle. The expense is because of the high cost of drugs and lab media and disposable. Stringent laboratory controls are needed to enable a successful cycle and the maintenece of IVF lab and equipment comes at a high cost. So when an IVF lab is chosen it is important to see that the lab has a good quality control program in place and the required equipment.
